I am the ‘matriarch’ of a cycling crazed family. I live in the land of Lance {Lance Armstrong – Austin TX}. I am Mama Kong of Kongko Urban Cycling Gear. I am a quilter. It just makes sense to start a quilty challenge around the Tour de France. The Tour de France begins THIS week, July 3, starting in Rotterdam and ending at the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 25.

So, We will begin on July 3. Each Tour de France team has 9 members so the challenge is to make something composed of 9 blocks or 9 fabrics or 9 designs representing cycling. Your interpretation. . . circles, wheels, hexies, mountains, chains… whatever you envision. It could be in the block design and/or the fabric. The block designs that come quickly to mind are pinwheel, whirligig, Irish chain, dresden, wagon wheel…you get the idea. You can be ambitious and make 9 different blocks. If you are only up to making one block that is ok too. It can be pieced or appliqued…or whatever method you choose. This is a fun challenge not a demand ![]()
At the end of the Tour there will be a giveaway drawing for the group members …perhaps more than one.
I have some WONDERFUL prize contributors!! Details to follow soon.
I have started a Flickr group. Please join at the Flickr group then come back and leave a comment on this post that you are participating.

Hey Mama Kong, that’s one cute picture of you over there. You challenge sounds fun, don’t know if I’m organized enough to get it together to do, but I’ll be watching to see what everyone else does!

I’m going to try a single Irish chain design – not sure how far I will get, but one block a day for 9 days seems like an attainable goal!
Well , I have this super quilting friend, who is teaching me how to sew. I’ve never made a quilt, though with her watchful guidance, I quilted a potholder. Anyhow, the disease much be catching, and since I had too much coffee when I read a FB post about your crazy fun I decided to join the madness. As for a cycling theme, that will come around day three when my head begins to spin.
I have never attempted a circle but am getting to grips with pinwheels – plus I love my bike, so count me in.
ugh!.. I can’t join the flikr…. yahoo has locked me out!… ugh!

My husband is a road racer and one of my sons is a mountain/downhill racer and part owner of a bike shop in Louisville Kentucky so going to the Tour De France in 2005 was an amazing day. Lance threw his water bottle a foot from my son. I know I have missed the quilt challenge but would love to know where to look at the finished quilts or blocks.
